Individual, Family and Marital Therapy

Dr. Abrams offers therapy for adults, families and couples. Every client is assessed during an Initial Consultation Evaluation that takes from one to four sessions. During this evaluation, Dr. Abrams determines what intervention would be best. Recommendations for individual or family work may be suggested, depending on the problem to be resolved. Intervention may require only a few sessions, which we call consultation. Similarly, a couple may need limited sessions for short-term specific goals, such as improved communications. Other times, long-term individual or family work is the best option, which requires a greater commitment. Work may involve a behavioral, cognitive and/or systems approach, again, depending on the nature of the problem and depending on the client. Outside referrals may also be necessary, as we aim to help you find the resource that best suits your needs.

Group Therapy

Mothers Groups: Gain support, perspective, and insight for your specific parenting challenges in a small group of peers. Groups meet bimonthly for 90 minutes each and commitment is required.

Adolescent and Young Adult Groups: Guided insight and peer support for teens and young adults addressing anxiety, identity development, eating disorders, anger and other challenges. Groups are formed based on age and issues. For young adults, ages 18 - 22. They meet weekly for 75 minutes. Commitment is required.

Child Behavior Assessments

Behavioral, developmental and cognitive assessments allow parents and students to understand the nature of their social or academic challenges. A Behavioral Assessment package, for ages two and up, may include parent and teacher interviews, a classroom or in-office observation, parent/teacher standardized behavioral questionnaires, and written report with recommendations for intervention.

Psycho-educational and diagnostic evaluations are also available for all ages. Such an evaluation may include a social-emotional and/or cognitive testing. Along with testing to assess developmental and/or cognitive abilities, Dr. Abrams can provide services as your advocate in the process of communicating test results to teachers and/or facilitating individual educational planning.

Assessment facilitates treatment planning and intervention which in turn facilitates growth and maturation. Assessment materials may include:

  • Behavioral Assessment Scale for Children (BASC)
  • Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBC)
  • Early Childhood Inventory
  • Child Depression Inventory (CDI)
  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children III - Revised (WISC-III)
  • Woodcock Johnson Cognitive or Achievement Testing
